I am Going Where I have to Go
By Sallyann Keith

From Theodore Roethke’s poem "The Waking"

"I learn by going where I have to go."
I haven’t chosen where I’m going.
I would rather live as I have lived before
Where I was loved and cared for by one man
Instead of by an army of my friends
Who come and go and show that they do care.
But I must go where now I have to go.

And I am fortunate the path is there
Although the future is unclear.
Each day flows on and follows the one before.
Time passes all too quickly, though the
hours seem slow, the progress negligible.
The time, the days do disappear
who knows where
And I am going where I have to go.

And I am learning as I go
New things and old, how to care for my own sorrows.
How to fill the days with something like pleasure
and work that may have meaning,
though it often seems a wasteful use of time.
But I am learning by going where I have to go.

And though I don’t know where this path may lead,
Or how long I have to travel this new road,
I am going where I have to go
And it is taking me somewhere
beyond my present view
to another horizon
where I pray
I may continue to learn
By going where I have to go.
