The Drummer
By Betty Paris
(For Tony)
Conceived in cadence and endowed
with the cast away contortions of her womb, he
has- more than most - kept his
mother's primitive movements in his bones
Yearning and instinct force the heat of his
drums in self-rescue rythms..toward the
great "white light" - which some of us do not
seek or recognize till the universe closes
our final eyes.

Animals wander on the
dusts of many continents,
Fish in the twisting seas and the
hippo in the leafy river beds
Birds seek out and find
mysterious liberating breezes
all these must have paths
which often we cannot see...but surely must the drummer..

Born of the at-risk attitude of conception, the drummer may
continue to lead us "through the gauntlet", while only
he knows the score.
