Kaylen's Note
By Tony Adams

It was a cool June morning
Long shadows were cast
Father’s Day is gone
Three days has since passed.

I am a repair lineman
A power company I work for
Dispatched to an outage
Twelve houses, maybe more.

When I arrived
At the outage location
I cleared the fault
With a single operation.

The fuse blown out
Of that I could see
A twenty-five ‘T’
Is what it should be.

A red helium balloon
On the line there too
I cleared it away
It’s what I must do.

“Thanks for coming out,”
I heard from a customer door
I closed in the fuse
It’s what I came for.

I called the dispatcher
And wanted to see
If I was clear
Or a new job for me.

The balloon had a ribbon
Where a note was tied
I took off the note
And set the balloon aside.

I read the note
It burned in my head
I’ll tell you now
What the little note said.

“Happy Father’s Day Daddy,
We hope you are having
A good time in heaven.”
Love, Kaylen.

I really was moved
By the words on the note
I had a knot in my stomach
And my heart in my throat.

I sat in my truck
Until my body settled down
So I tuned in the radio
For a more soothing sound.

What happened next
Is still with me today
My emotions rise
When I hear this song play.

“In The Arms of An Angel”
Is it a message for me?
I think the message
Is for everyone to see.

The note is so clear
It moves me the most
The song is a reminder
To keep the angels close.
