Linda Boyden
I love words. I love to read them, write them, misspell them and create “new” words  through typos. Example: I once typed politicians as ploticians, which is both so Freudian and hilarious that I had to start a list.  I could never master typewriters, but with the advent of home computers, I could follow my heart’s desire to weave words into stories.
I want to create characters that touch your heart and tickle your funny bone.  I want to create stories that make you ache when you have to put the book down to cook or change a diaper or earn a buck.
I am a children’s author and illustrator, with three picture books in print. I want my words to reach any forgotten kids and let them know that I was also a forgotten, invisible child, who came out of it by  discovering the solace inside the pages of a fine book.
Although I love the poetry of picture books, and the research that goes with non-fiction writing, my heart knows I am a writer of fiction.  I have been working on a middle grade novel for many years now and hope to someday master the craft of plotting and the “science” of finding a good agent.
Besides writing, I have spent most of my adult life leading children to literacy.  From 1970-1997, I taught in primary grades, receiving my master’s in Gifted and Talented Education in 1992 from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. In 1997, I abandoned full-time teaching for full-time writing.  My first picture book, “The Blue Roses”, debuted in 2002.  It was the recipient of Lee and Low Books’ first New Voices Award, the 2003 Paterson Prize, Wordcraft Circle of Native American Writers and Storytellers’ Book of the Year, Children’s Literature, 2002-2003, and was included on the prestigious CCBC (Cooperative Children’s Book Center) 2003 Choices list of recommended titles. By Fall, 2010, I will have two picture books out that I wrote and illustrated from the University of New Mexico Press: “Powwow’s Coming” (2007) and “Giveaways, an ABC of Loanwords from the Americas” (2010).
I am a long time member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and Wordcraft Circle of Native American Writers and Storytellers.
On the last Tuesdays of most months I perform at Redding Library for preschool storytimes @ 10:30 (info: call 245-7259). Most months I also perform at Redding’s Barnes & Noble’s preschool storytime on the last Wednesdays @ 10 (info: call 222-2006).
I am a local, Shasta County author who enjoys doing author visits at schools and libraries as well as presenting workshops at writing conferences around the country. For fees and program details visit www.lindaboyden.com
